Last week I noticed on of my Comps was "stuck" in a cave. Went down to the fishroom today and saw that there was a ton of fry in said cave! I'm fairly certian of who mom and dad are just by watching the tank for the last almost 2 hours and I believe that they are my f1 red fins from Oyer. Would like some opinions as to whether or not they are the same species or not.

Let me know your thoughts. I'm going to pull the fry and set them aside. If they are definitely hybrids then they will probably be culled. By the way the tank has Black Comps, Yellow Heads, Fire Fins, and Sumbu Dwarfs.

By no means am I an expert, but looks like the female is a different species.......

But after seeing the tank stocklist, am not sure what else she could be??

OK, I think I got what you're asking? Here are my thoughts:

If you notice the female "mom" she, behind her pectoral fins and forward of her anal fin, her body is slightly depressed or slightly inverted . This is often overlooked as hunger etc. However, the stomach of the fish is located a bit further forward than the depression I'm talking about.

Anyway, the depression is very strong evidence that she has slung eggs within the last few weeks and has yet to restore fat and egg tissue for her next spawn. This obviously indicates, aside from obvious guarding, has fry or eggs somewhere.

The other thing, maybe the only thing, I think you were asking is "are those two fish pictured the same species." IMO, there is no way Either one of those fish is a "Black Comp" and, moreover, they both look like "Red Fins". The "Father" is in full spawning coloration while the mother looks colored down as is expected for a post-spawning Alto.

If you haven't pulled them already I'd wait until they're noodling around the shell opening and maybe even until you see a few around the tank. I have found that the notoriously hard to raise fry of altos are much hardier the later I pull them. Hope this helps.

Congrats... I agree I believe they're different CPs as well.
