I witnessed a pair of my METRIACLIMA SP. CHILUMBA pair off and spawn today. This happened about 6 or 7 times over about a 2 hour period. The female appears to be holding and is hanging out in the back of the tank behind some rocks. Should I hold off for a few days before I feed the tank? This is the first time any of my cichlids have spawned for me. Thanks in advance.

You can hold off on feeding for the next 24-48 hours without a problem, even longer if you want to... usually by day 3 you're in the clear with mbuna IME thumbsup.gif

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Well it's been 4 days and she is still holding. She is not being harrsed as there are 2 other females in the tank. She has not shown any interest in food and chases anyone away that venture too close to her corner. I am setting up another tank for her hopefully have it up and running Wed afternoon. Would a 10 gal tank be okay for her? Anyone have an idea how long she will hold? Should I return her back to the main tank after she spits or wait acouple of days? Sorry about all the questions but this is all new to me. Any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again Sailor

I moved the female to her own 20 gal tank this morning. It is day 10 and she is still holding. I had to take apart the 90 gal to catch her. We just noticed another Chilumba female holding. That is twice now to find females holding right after a water change.

Here is a couple of pics of the male.

He is not showing his breeding colours in these pics. He is almost white inbetween his stripes when he is. Mark has a great picture of this.

Here is the first holding female in her 20 gal tank @ 11 days

The second holding female in the 90 gal is hiding way at the back of the tank and isn't being co-operative.
